Corporate Arms 4: Regional and Island Councils - 1973-1996

From 1973-1996, Scotland was split up into a set of nine regional (i.e. two-tier) authorities, plus three island councils, and 49 district ones. To those of us living in the Soviet region of Strathclyde, which ludicrously had just short of HALF of the population of Scotland, this was not an improvement!

Heraldically, the Regional Councils were allocated a crown :

a circlet richly chased from which are issuant eight thistle-heads leaved/slipped (three and two halves visible) Or:

and supporters, of which the sinister one was always:  a unicorn Argent armed, maned and unguled Or and gorged with a collar Gules from which is pendant an oval badge Azure fimbriated Or charged with a saltire Argent  while the dexter had a local significance.
