Families of Corporate Arms - 2 The Incorporated Trades of Glasgow

Another interesting family of arms is that of the Incorporated Trades of Glasgow.





Arms of the Trades House of Glasgow - Granted 19th August 1911 Volume 21 Folio 26


Parted per fess Argent and Gules on a mount in base an oak tree the stem at the base thereof surmounted of a salmon with a signet ring in its mouth, on the top of the tree a redbreast and in the sinister fess point an ancient handbell all proper.
Crest: Fourteen arrows in sheaf points upwards Or, banded Azure.


Here are the Incorporations in order of seniority, which is not the same as their order of registration:

Incorporation of Hammermen in Glasgow
Gules a dexter arm issuing from the sinister flankfessways, the hand hand holding a smith's hammer, in chief an imperial crown all proper.
Crest: On a mount vert an oak-tree Proper, the stem at the base thereof surmounted by a salmon on its back also Proper, with a signet-ring in its mouth Or, on the top of the tree a red-breast and hanging from the sinister side an ancient hand-bell also Proper.
Grant: December 20th 1923 Volume 23 folio 45 
Only the Hammermen and the Cordiners have a crest.

Incorporation of Tailors in Glasgow


Argent on a chevron Gules between a bodkin accompanied on the dexter by a pair of shears expanded in saltire and in the sinister by a tailor's smoothing iron all proper in chief, on a mount in base Vert a tent purpure fringed Or, a cutting square chevronwise of the last.
Grant: May 14th 1924 Volume 26 folio 30 

Incorporation of Cordiners in Glasgow

Azure a chevron Or between three cutting-knives Argent ensigned with a marquess's coronet proper.
Crest: The figure of Saint Crispin holding in his dexter hand a branch of olive and in the sinister a cutting-knife Proper.

Incorporation of Maltmen in Glasgow

Gules on a chevron between two garbs in chief and in base a malt measure full of malt and across the mouth of the same a rolling-pin in bend all Or, two malt shovels of the field.

Incorporation of Weavers in Glasgow


Azure on a chevron between three leopards' faces each having in the mouth a shuttle Argent as many thistles slipped proper.
Grant: December 10th 1922 volume 25 folio 53 

Incorporation of Bakers in Glasgow

Gules a hand paleways proper holding a balance between three garbs Or on a chief barry of six Azure and Argent between two foul anchors Sable, the eye of Justice irradiated shining on clouds proper from which the hand descends.
Grant: December 20th 1923 volume 26 folio 16


Incorporation of Skinners and Glovers in Glasgow


Per fess Azure and Ermine, a pale counterchanged, three rams salient Argent, two and one, armed and unguled Or, on a chief Or an ancient handbell Sable between two chapeaux Gules, turned up of the Second.

Incorporation of Wrights in Glasgow


Parted per fess dovetailed Gules and Or, in chief an ancient Scots nail hammer and axe in saltire, surmounted of a wright's chisel edge downwards paleways, and in base the half length figure of Saint Kentigern affronté vested and mitred, his right raised in the act of benediction and having in his left hand a crozier all proper.

Incorporation of Coopers in Glasgow

Argent on a chevron Gules between two barrels in chief and base a salmon on its back proper, holding in its mouth a signet ring Or, gemmed Azure, a croze iron between an adze and an axe as used in the Trade all proper.

Incorporation of Fleshers in Glasgow

Azure two pole axes in saltire between three bulls' heads and necks cabossed Argent, on a chief of the last a boar's head couped Gules.
Grant: February 25th 1924 volume 26 folio 26 


Incorporation of Masons in Glasgow


Azure on a chevron between two cotises and accompanied by three towers, two in chief and one in base all Argent, the last masoned Sable, a pair of compasses proper.
Grant: February 19th 1917 volume 23 folio 17 


Incorporation of Gardeners in Glasgow


Argent on a mount in base, the Tree of Paradise, environed with a serpent, between Adam and Eve all proper, on a chief Azure a spade and rake in saltire between in the dexter the sun in his splendour and in the sinister the moon in her increment all proper.
Grant: March 25th 1924 volume 26 folio 29 


Incorporation of Barbers in Glasgow


Vert, on a chevron between two razors endorsed open blades downwards Argent in chief and in base on a stand proper a peruke of the second shaded Sable, three lancets expanded, all proper.

Incorporation of Bonnetmakers and Dyers in Glasgow


Argent a chevron enarched of three tracts Gules, Or and Azure, between a pair of clipping shears accompanied by a Kilmarnock bonnet in the dexter and a wool pack in the sinister all proper in chief and in base two hands clasped, sleeves turned back of the fourth, semmet and cuffs proper.

Although not one of the Incorporated Trades of Glasgow, indeed, as far as I know, not even any longer in existence, I append one of my favourite armorial paintings in the Register - the Fishmongers' Company of Glasgow:


Parted per fess in chief parted per pale in the dexter Gules a peacock sejant upon a charger proper, in the sinister Azure three fish naiant, two to the dexter and one to the sinister, dimidiated Argent, in base Or on a mount in base an oak tree the stem surmounted by a salmon with a signet ring in its mouth, on the top of the tree a redbreast and in the sinister fess  point an ancient handbell all proper.

Crest: A falcon reguardant hooded and belled perched on a sinister gauntlet, all proper and on a compartment below the shield are placed for supporters two figures of Neptune proper, crowns Vert, holding in their exterior hands a trident, the butts resting upn the heads of two dolphins between their legs with tails erected all proper.
