Heraldry of Scottish Primary Schools
Many of Scotland's Primary Schools have been granted arms so, at the suggestion of Vice President Roads, Unicorn has prepared a postcard with some of them for the Lyon Office. Their lack of mantling, supporters and assorted geegaws, so beloved in personal heraldry, give the school arms an enviable Zen-like simplicity. School badges form many children's first encounter with symbols - my own was the mitre of St Mirin - it would be wonderful if more schools would petition. In the case of Uplawmoor, I remember Mrs Roads telling me at the time, at the children's insistence, a "new" tincture - the continental cendré or ash-coloured was added to the Register.
