Grave Matters again....

Inspired by Professor Gillian Black's respectful forays into funeral heraldry, I visited the churchyard  at Dundonald in Ayrshire and found this moving monument, erected by Sir Peter Mackie of Corraith, 1st Bart, in memory of his son, Captain Logan Mackie of the Ayrshire Yeomanry,  killed in action in Palestine in 1917 aged only twenty-four.

Arms: Argent two ravens addorsed Sable pendant from an arrow fessways piercing their necks proper, on a chief of the Second three ears of barley slipped also Proper.

Crest: A raven proper.

Arms recorded PRAABS 1902 volume 17 fol. 50

Gillian has started an interesting project on Twitter on Heraldry in Scottish Graveyards of which the blog posts she provides are a sample. She would be delighted to receive members' photographs of heraldry in cemeteries at @SHeraldry

If you do not use Twitter, please send your pictures to the Membership Secretary and I will forward them to Gillian.

To keep track of it all, we now have an Album on the Members' Gallery HERE.
