University of Glasgow 1451

Today marks the anniversary of the issuing of the papal bull by Nicholas V in 1451 establishing the University of Glasgow, the fourth oldest in the English-speaking world after Oxford, Cambridge and St Andrews.

Heraldically, Nicholas V Parentucilli is of interest as the first pope to adopt arms on election - perhaps because his family did not possess arms. He simply chose the papal keys as his charge.

One of the most famous architectural and heraldic features of the University is its Lion and Unicorn Staircase, which it brought from the Old College in 1870. Here it is with the farewell photograph of the staff and students in 1870 and then where it is now, turned round, in the Gilbert Scott building.
