Sir Henry Fairfax

This appeared today on the Lyon Office's Facebook page:

Google Doodle is today paying tribute to the eminent Scottish scientist, Mary Somerville, after whom Somerville College, Oxford, is named. Her brother, Sir Henry Fairfax, recorded arms in 1836 in memory of their father who had fought at the Battle of Camperdown.



This provoked the usual comment about the supposed ugliness of pictorial/scenic chiefs. I must say I think many of them are rather lovely, including the oft-criticised arms of Nelson himself, granted by the College of Arms:



and here is a more recent example, Sir John Hunter of Brechlinn, recorded in 1919, this time of a "naval cruiser proper":
