Today's Lecture

Leslie Hodgson's talk today on the Heraldry of the Incorporated Trades of Scotland was most interesting, as Leslie always is. He showed us what a small proportion of the arms used by trades in the ancient burghs is actually legally recorded at the Lyon Office and the number who have simply adopted London ones or other ones in Scotland. Among the recently recorded ones, both splendidly painted by Herald Painter, Yvonne Holton, are those of the Convenery of the Incorporated Trades of Edinburgh and the Incorporation of Candlemakers of Edinburgh.

Before the lecture, the very large audience stood in respectful remembrance of our friends Alan Watson, secretary to the Society, and the distinguished genealogist, Hugh Peskett whose death was sadly announced by the Chairman. May they rest in peace.
