We hear with immense sadness of the death of our member Herbert Coutts MBE.
Herbert was a most loyal member of the Society for many years, having been a distinguished Curator and then Director of Culture and Leisure for Edinburgh City Council, in which capacity he brought extraordinary exhibitions to Edinburgh, such as the Chinese Warriors and then the "Golden Warriors of the Ukranian Steppes" exhibition, which he brought to Edinburgh in 1993 from the National Museum of Ukranian History, located in the beautiful Kiev-Pechersk monastery.
Herbert was a Knight of Magistral Grace in Obedience of the Order of Malta and Secretary to the Scottish Delegation, in which capacity he organized all the public events of the Order in Scotland.
HSS Vice-President Elizabeth Roads LVO adds:
"Very very sad news. I shall remember my friendship with Herbert with great gratitude and he and his family are in my prayers. From the Society's point of view his greatest contribution was arranging for the City Art Centre to put on our great exhibition "Lions and Thistles. An exhibition of six centuries of Scottish heraldry" in 1995. The Patron was The Princess Royal and Vice Patrons the Earl of Erroll, the Duke of Argyll and Sir Malcolm Innes of Edingight. I worked very closely with the curators at the Art Centre and it was spectacular. There are still catalogues should anyone wish them."
May he rest in peace.
