The fifth event in the series celebrating the 350th anniversary of the creation of the Lyon Register takes place in Moat Brae, very near the railway station in Dumfries, on Thursday 12th May at 6.30 p.m. Lyon and several other Officers of Arms will be in attendance.
Here is the description of the talk:
March Pursuivant Extraordinary Philip Tibbetts will address the topic Stories in Scotland's Skies.
Flags have a particularly emotive connection to the people of a community. They may be easy to see as primarily graphical images but, whilst this gives them their potency to communicate, the power of the message being conveyed comes from its symbolism. That potent symbolism in flags may be intentionally incorporated into the design or become associated with it subsequently over time. The stories captured in this symbolism will be explored from the well-known legend of the Saltire, recorded at the start of the Lyon Court’s register 350 years ago, right through to development of modern community flags.Tickets free can be booked via Eventbrite HERE.
Philip gives tirelessly of his time to promote heraldry and vexillology - including, of course, being both a trustee of the Flag Institute nd a committee-member of the HSS.
Please do give some thought to coming along to Philip's talk if you possibly can - he is a brilliant speaker with a huge experience of this interesting subject. Dumfries is only 90 minutes or so from Glasgow by train and well worth a visit in its own right. Rothesay Herald will be making a day of it in Dumfries and will stand any other members who come down to a drink in the Station Hotel at 5 p.m.!
