Marvellous visit to Busta House,Shetland, now a hotel but still bearing the marital arms of Gifford of Busta from volume one of the Register, and his wife, Elizabeth, daughter of Sir John Mitchell of Westshore.
On the entrance hall wall of the hotel is the splendid heraldic map of Shetland created nearly forty years ago by HSS member Jim Carlyle.
One of the objects in the Shetland Museum and Archives is the gravestone belonging to Henry Phankouth dating from 1529.
The stone was the unexpected find of archivist Brian Smith and his brilliant team. Phankouth was German which may be a clue but not much is known of the composition of the arms themselves so if anyone has any thoughts on the subject to share, it would be good to hear them.
Edit: I am a dope! Dr David M. Bertie wrote an excellent article on the Kibister Stone in vol 84 of Tak Tent.
