The ancient arms of Glasgow were finally recorded in 1866 but the ancient symbols of St Mungo from the city's seal had been in use for a long time from 1863 several Lord Povosts petitioned for arms which bore quotations from the city's arms - the tree, the fish with the ring, the bell or the robin.
The first three to do so, were:
Peter Clouston, Lord Provost from 1860 -1863 who opted for the salmon with Queen Languoreth's ring:
His successors, John Blackie (1863-1866) and William Arthur ( 1866-1869) both chose the robin of St Serf.
