Historical Objects in Heraldry III

Yesterday's representation of the Stone of Scone leads on nicely to today's post - the arms of Kincardine  and Deeside District Council from 1975-1996 (and indeed also used in the arms of Kincardineshire from 1927-1975): the arms use the Honours of Scotland, the Scottish crown, Sceptre and Sword of State. This is, of course, a reference to the fact that the Honours had been smuggled out of Edinburgh Castle to prevent Cromwell from capturing them and melting them down, as he did to the English crown jewels, and hiding them in the castle of the Earl Marischal, Hereditary Keeper of the Honours, at Dunnottar. The blazon reads: Gules, the Sword of State and the Sceptre of Scotland in saltire, in chief the Crown of Scotland Or, a closet wavy reduced Azure fimbriated Argent; on a base wavy Vert, three pallets Or

The arms of the former Kincardineshire County Council, granted in 1927, go one further and even show the Castle:

The blazon is: Gules the Sword of State and Sceptre of Scotland in saltire, in chief the Crown of Scotland, and in base on a rock a ruined castle, all Or.

There is a good account of the hiding of the Honours of Scotland on this beautiful website which I highly recommend.
