The Service of Thankskgiving for the life of the Queen took place at St Giles' Cathedral on Monday 12th September, Her Majesty's children walking behind the coffin as it was brought up the Royal Mile from the Palace of Holyroodhouse.
As the procession neared the Cathedral, three of the hereditary officers, the Earl of Dundee, bearer of the Royal Standard of Scotland, and Viscount Maitland, representing his father, the Earl of Lauderdale, bearer of the National Flag of Scotland, left to enter the church by the north door to collect their flags. The Duke of Hamilton, as Lord Abernethy Keeper of the Crown of Scotland, entered and, carrying the Crown, the oldest in the United Kingdom, waited with Rothesay and Carrick until the procession had arrived and Her Majesty's coffin was on the catafalque. They then moved forward and placed the Crown of Scotland on the coffin.
