James V Ducat

 A fascinating twitter/X post today from the remarkable Cameron Maclean, a PhD student at Glasgow University working with the glorious Hunterian Coin Cabinet. 


 It is a ducat minted in 1539 in the reign of James V.  Cameron says it is the first British coin to bear a date; it is kept in the National Museums of Scotland. He adds that the coin was never circulated but the reverse was used again for the billon or low-purity silver bawbee,
